Interview with Andrew Cheetham, September 2011
What attracts you to the sea as a subject?
AC: With the sea you’re left alone. But aloneness isn’t what I’m trying to convey. I don’t want my paintings to be empty. I want them to be empty and full. But I haven’t found a way of doing that yet. I’m drawing decay, the process of life. I find it amusing and slightly depressing: the fact that nothing lasts. Nothing is permanent.
You’re trying to capture something in constant motion. How do you manage to work with such a changeable subject?
